Mesothelioma Lawyers: Health Care Providers

People with mesothelioma will need the services of a number of different medical specialists during the course of their diagnosis and treatment.

The medical journey usually begins at the office of your family doctor or internist. Your doctor will perform a physical exam and pay special attention to any sign of fluid in the chest, abdomen, or heart. Fluid build up can be a sign of mesothelioma.

If pleural (lung) mesothelioma is suspected, you may be referred to a pulmonologist, or lung specialist, for testing. He or she will order a serious of diagnostic imaging tests that may include a chest X-ray, CT scan, MRI, or PET scan.

A radiologist will read and interpret the results of these imaging tests and send a report to your doctor. A pathologist will study samples of fluid or tissue taken in a biopsy and report back to your doctor.

Once mesothelioma is diagnosed, you will see an oncologist and surgeon who specialize in mesothelioma.
